Related services: eavestrough cleaning, usually booked with a fall window clean, screen and skylight cleaning, and post-renovation window cleaning once the contractors have left.

What actually makes Toronto home windows dirty

Three things, mostly. Winter salt spray on anything facing a busy road, pollen in May and June (the maples and cottonwoods in older neighbourhoods like the Annex, Leaside and the Beaches coat everything yellow-green for a few weeks), and hard water spots from lawn sprinklers hitting the lower windows all summer. Houses near construction sites add dust to the list.

The inside gets its own film from cooking and heating, which people usually notice for the first time when the low winter sun hits the glass.

What a residential visit includes

We clean the glass inside and out, and the tracks, frames and sills get cleaned on every visit rather than being sold as an extra. Screens can be taken down, washed and put back, and skylights are a separate item we handle through our screen and skylight cleaning service.

Second and third-storey windows are where most homeowners stop doing it themselves, for good reason. We reach those from the outside with water-fed poles and ladders, so nobody is leaning out of a bedroom window. For a house that has just been painted, renovated or had new windows installed, paint flecks, stickers and drywall dust need scraping rather than a normal wash, which is covered under post-renovation window cleaning.

Houses, condos and larger properties

A detached house in North York or Etobicoke and a condo unit downtown are different jobs. For houses we work from the ground and ladders. For condo units, the exterior glass on most towers can only be cleaned from the outside by the building’s contractor, so what we can do for a unit owner is the interior glass, balcony doors and any glass reachable from the balcony. If you are on a condo board looking at the whole building, that is our condo and property management program.

Estate homes with a lot of glass, conservatories or tall foyer windows are quoted after a walk-through, because the access varies so much from one house to the next.

When to book

Spring is the busy season. Searches for window cleaning in Toronto run highest from March through May, and that is when our calendar fills fastest. A lot of homeowners do one clean in spring after the salt and pollen, and a second in early fall before the weather turns, which also lines up with eavestrough cleaning once the leaves are down.

If you are not sure whether your windows need it yet, these five signs are a good check. We also wrote up how often windows should be professionally cleaned and the case for regular window cleaning at home.

Common questions

How much does residential window cleaning cost in Toronto?

It depends mainly on the number of windows, how many storeys the house has, and whether you want interior, exterior or both. Screens, skylights and post-renovation residue add to the job. Tru Vue gives free estimates, so you know the price before anything is booked.

Do you clean the inside and outside of the windows?

Yes. Most residential visits cover both sides of the glass, along with the tracks, frames and sills. If you only want the exterior done, that can be quoted on its own.

How often should I get my home windows cleaned?

Twice a year works for most Toronto homes: once in spring after the winter salt and pollen, and once in early fall. Homes on busy roads, near construction or with a lot of trees may need the exterior done more often.

Can you clean second and third-floor windows?

Yes. Upper-floor windows are cleaned from the outside using water-fed poles and ladders, so there is no need for anyone to lean out of a window.

Do I need to be home for the window cleaning?

Only if interior glass is being cleaned. For exterior-only visits we just need access to the yard and to know about any locked gates or pets.
