Why Toronto eavestroughs clog the way they do

Most of Toronto’s older neighbourhoods sit under mature maple, oak and ash, often right over the roofline. In neighbourhoods like Leaside, High Park, the Kingsway and Lawrence Park, a single fall can fill a trough solid. Spring adds a second load: maple seeds (the helicopters), catkins and shingle grit that washes down off the roof.

The problem is not the leaves themselves. It is what happens when a blocked trough meets a Toronto winter. Water that cannot drain sits in the trough, freezes, and the next thaw sends it back up under the bottom row of shingles or over the front edge and down the wall. That is where ice dams, stained brick, wet basements and cracked foundation corners come from. Clearing a trough costs a small fraction of any of those repairs.

What the clean covers

We clear the debris out of the troughs by hand, working along the full run of each trough rather than just the visible corners. Downspouts are checked for flow and cleared if they are blocked, because a clean trough draining into a plugged downspout just moves the problem six feet over.

While we are up there we look at the trough itself: sagging runs, loose hangers, joints that are leaking, and places where water has been overflowing. If we see something, we tell you before we leave.

When to book

Late October through November is when every house on the street needs it at once. Searches for eavestrough cleaning in Toronto more than double in October and November compared with the summer, and our schedule follows the same curve. Booking in early October, or setting up a fall visit in advance, gets you a better slot. Houses with a lot of trees overhead often need a second clean in spring.

Pairing it with window cleaning

The fall eavestrough visit is a good time to have the exterior windows done as well, since the same ladders and the same trip cover both. Many of our customers book their fall residential window cleaning alongside it. There is more on keeping a house on a routine in regular window cleaning for your home.

We also do eavestroughs on commercial buildings, plazas and low-rise condos, where the troughs are longer and higher and the job often needs a lift. That is quoted with the building’s commercial window cleaning or on its own.

Common questions

How much does eavestrough cleaning cost in Toronto?

Price depends mostly on the length of trough, the height of the house, the roof pitch and how full the troughs are. A bungalow with light debris costs less than a three-storey house under mature trees. Tru Vue gives free estimates before booking.

How often should eavestroughs be cleaned?

At least once a year in late fall after the leaves are down. Houses under large maples or oaks usually need a second cleaning in spring to clear seeds and catkins.

When is the best time to book eavestrough cleaning in Toronto?

Early to mid October. Late October and November are the busiest weeks of the year, so booking ahead gets you a better slot, ideally after most leaves have dropped from the trees nearest your roof.

Can you clean eavestroughs on commercial buildings?

Yes. Tru Vue cleans eavestroughs on plazas, low-rise commercial buildings and condos as well as houses. Longer and higher runs may need a lift, which is included in the quote.

Do you check the downspouts too?

Yes. Downspouts are checked for flow and cleared if they are blocked, since a clean eavestrough that drains into a clogged downspout will still overflow.
